Wally Pro Outdoor Wall Planter Review: Durability and Best Plants for Sun-Exposed Walls

If you're looking to add greenery to a bare exterior wall, the Wally Pro Outdoor Wall Planter is a popular choice. Designed specifically for outdoor use, this planter promises durability and style. But does it hold up under harsh sun and rain? And which plants thrive in its shallow pockets? In this review, we'll examine the Wally Pro's construction, ease of installation, and the best plant selections for sun-exposed walls.

We tested the Wally Pro Tan Planter on a south-facing brick wall over several months. Here's what we found about its materials, drainage, and overall performance.

Build Quality and UV Resistance

The Wally Pro is made from a UV-stabilized polypropylene that resists fading and cracking. After three months of full sun exposure, the tan color showed no significant discoloration. The material feels sturdy yet lightweight, making it easy to mount. The planter includes a built-in drip tray that prevents water stains on walls, a common issue with outdoor planters.

One tradeoff: the plastic can become brittle in freezing temperatures if left outdoors year-round. In colder climates, you might want to bring it inside during winter. But for mild to warm climates, it's a durable option.

• UV-stabilized polypropylene resists fading in direct sun
• Built-in drip tray protects walls from water damage
• Lightweight design simplifies mounting on various surfaces

Best Plants for Sun-Exposed Walls

Because the Wally Pro has a shallow planting depth (about 4 inches), you need plants with compact root systems that can handle full sun. Succulents like sedum and echeveria are excellent choices, as they thrive in bright light and well-draining soil. Trailing plants such as string of pearls or creeping jenny also work well, adding a cascading effect.

For a pop of color, consider annuals like petunias or portulaca. They bloom all summer and tolerate heat. Herbs like thyme and oregano are another practical option—they love sun and you can harvest them right from your wall.

• Succulents: sedum, echeveria, sempervivum
• Trailing plants: string of pearls, creeping jenny
• Sun-loving annuals: petunias, portulaca
• Herbs: thyme, oregano

Installation and Maintenance Tips

Mounting the Wally Pro is straightforward. It comes with screws and wall anchors for wood, drywall, or masonry. We recommend using a level and drilling pilot holes for a secure fit. The planter's back has a keyhole bracket that makes it easy to hang and remove for cleaning.

Watering is simple: pour water into the top opening, and it distributes evenly through internal channels. The drip tray catches excess, but in heavy rain, you may need to empty it occasionally. Fertilize monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer like the Nutrients Houseplant Mix (diluted) to keep plants healthy.

• Use included hardware for most wall types
• Water from the top; empty drip tray after heavy rain
• Fertilize monthly during growing season

The Wally Pro Outdoor Wall Planter is a durable, well-designed solution for adding greenery to sun-exposed walls. Its UV-resistant material, built-in drip tray, and easy installation make it a great choice for both beginners and experienced gardeners. Pair it with sun-loving succulents or trailing plants for a low-maintenance vertical garden that lasts.
